Far beyond simply helping one feel good, massage has an impressive range of health benefits. Research studies conducted in the United States, Europe and Asia have documented the positive effects of massage on adults with job-related stress and anxiety, cocaine-exposed infants, preterm newborns, adolescents with anxiety disorders, and the immune function of HIV-positive males.
With a variety of hands-on methods, a skilled massage therapist not only stretches and loosens muscle and connective tissue, but also improves blood flow and the movement of lymph throughout the body. The therapist's hands facilitate the removal of metabolic waste products resulting from exercise or inactivity, allowing oxygen and nutrients to reach the cells and tissues. Sensory receptors in skin and muscles "wake up", bringing new awareness to areas that have been "cut off" by chronic tension patterns.
In addition, massage can stimulate the release of endorphins-- the body's natural painkillers--into the brain and nervous system. The release of muscular tension also helps to unblock and balance the overall flow of life energy throughout the body (known in different cultures as vital force, bioenergy, c'hi, prana, ki, etc.). All this benefits the body's general health and well being.
GLOSSARY of massage techniques:
The wide variety of therapeutic massages are sometimes confusing. Here are some short descriptions of the techniques most likely to be encountered.
Some massage therapists focus their work on one or two techniques, while others employ even more--using different combinations as dictated by the particular needs of the client.
Cranio-Sacral is a technique for finding and correcting cerebral and spinal imbalances or blockages that may cause sensory, motor, or intellectual dysfunction.
Deep Muscle/Connective Tissue Massage, as the name implies, releases the chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger pressure on contracted areas, either following or going across the grain of muscles, tendons and fascia. It can be used for specific work or full-body.
Pre/Post Natal Massage for pregnant mothers with doctor's OK!
Reflexology (zone therapy) uses similar principles, although it's organized around a system of points on the hands and feet that are thought to correspond, or "reflex", to all areas of the body. Specific work, but with full-body effects.
Shiatsu and Acupressure are Oriental-based systems of finger-pressure massage which treat special points along acupuncture "meridians", the invisible channels of energy flow in the body. Energy blocked along these meridians can cause physical discomfort, so the aim is to release the blocks and re-balance the energy flow. It can be used for full-body or specific work.
Sports Massage Therapy is classified into two categories: maintenance and event. Maintenance massage is an ongoing series of regularly scheduled sessions designed to help the athlete reach optimal performance through injury-free training. Event massage takes place before, during, or after competition to assist the athlete with preparation, performance and recovery. Pre-event massage is used as a supplement to an athlete's warm-up to enhance circulation and reduce excess muscle and mental tension prior to competition. Post-event massage is geared toward reducing the trauma that occurs after the cessation of vigorous exercise.
Swedish Massage uses a system of long strokes, kneading and friction techniques on the more superficial layers of the muscles, combined with active and passive movements of the joints. Used primarily for a full-body session, it promotes general relaxation, improves circulation and range of motion, and relieves muscle tension.
Trigger Point Therapy (a.k.a. Myotherapy of Neuromuscular Therapy) applies concentrated finger pressure to "trigger points"-- painful irritated areas in muscles--in order to break the cycle of spasm and pain. Often used to deal with pain.
Young, old, all in between. Active, inactive. Students. Working people. Retired people. Pregnant women. Performers. Artists. Anyone except those with medical contra-indications.
With certain circulatory ailments, especially phlebitis/thrombosis, as well as high fevers, infectious diseases, cancer (some types), cardiac problems, certain skin conditions, inflamed or infected injuries, areas of hemorrhage or heavy tissue damage, recent fractures or sprains.
If any of these conditions, or others, raise questions, a physician should be consulted. A professional massage therapist will also be able to explain when massage in not recommended.
